Copilot in PowerPoint: the button is missing or grayed out

Symptoms

• There is no Copilot button on the ribbon
• The button is there but inactive
• Copilot opens but cannot create a presentation from a file

Causes and fixes

1. No Copilot Pro or Microsoft 365 Copilot license

What to do: Check the subscription in your Microsoft account; for business, the admin assigns the license

2. The file is saved locally with AutoSave off

What to do: Save the presentation to OneDrive or SharePoint and turn on AutoSave

3. The source Word document is outside OneDrive

What to do: Move the document to OneDrive, since Copilot takes files from there

4. An outdated version of Office

What to do: Update Microsoft 365 through File, Account, Update options
