ChatGPT will not open a PDF or reads it with errors: causes and workarounds

Symptoms

• After the upload the model says the file is empty or unreadable
• Answers about numbers in the document differ from the original
• The file uploads and then disappears from the chat

Causes and fixes

1. The PDF is a scan without a text layer, and the model sees only page images

What to do: Run the file through OCR (Acrobat, opening it as a Doc in Google Drive, any OCR tool) and upload the text version

2. The file exceeds the size or page limit for your plan

What to do: Split the document into parts of 50 to 100 pages or upload only the sections you need

3. Tables in a PDF are read row by row out of order, and amounts from columns get mixed

What to do: Copy the table into Excel or Google Sheets and upload it as xlsx or csv

4. The daily upload limit on the free plan is used up

What to do: Wait for the reset or paste the document text into the chat in parts

5. The document is password-protected or copy-protected

What to do: Remove the protection in Acrobat or print it to a new PDF with a virtual printer

6. The document contains personal data or is under NDA and should not go into a public service at all

What to do: Anonymize the text or use NotebookLM in corporate Workspace or ChatGPT Business with a data processing agreement
