ChatGPT message limits: how much you get on Free, Plus and Pro and how not to burn through it in an hour

Symptoms

• The message "You've reached the current usage cap" or a switch to a lighter model
• Deep Research refuses, citing a limit
• A file upload stops with a daily limit message

Causes and fixes

1. On the free plan the strong model's limit resets every few hours, after which a lighter model answers

What to do: Do work tasks with files in the first half of the limit and ask small questions to the lighter model separately

2. Every file and image in a chat uses the limit faster than text

What to do: Combine several questions about one file into one request with a list, instead of five separate messages

3. The model rereads a long chat in full every time and eats quota with each new message

What to do: Start a new chat for each task and keep shared materials in a Project

4. Deep Research and image generation limits are counted separately and per month

What to do: Check the remaining allowance in Settings, and for large reviews alternate with Gemini Deep Research or Perplexity

5. Plus is exhausted on the reasoning model while the regular model is still available

What to do: Switch the model in the menu at the top of the chat instead of waiting for the reset
