How to delete your data from Claude and turn off training on your conversations

Symptoms

• A document that should have stayed inside the company went into the chat
• Security asks for confirmation of privacy settings
• You need to delete the account entirely

Causes and fixes

1. On personal plans Anthropic asks for an explicit choice about training on conversations, and it may be on by default

What to do: Settings, Privacy: turn off the use of conversations to improve the model. This applies to new and resumed conversations

2. A deleted chat disappears from the screen but stays on the servers for a period set by the policy

What to do: Delete the chat, then delete the entire history in Privacy; for full account deletion request Delete account

3. Project memory and materials are stored separately from chats

What to do: Delete the files from the Project and the Project itself if it held sensitive data

4. A company needs a legal commitment

What to do: The Team or Enterprise plan: data is out of training under the contract, with a data processing agreement and admin controls
